Mallory Wiedemann, a self-taught artist, is motivated by her innate curiosity, personal flair, and a strong passion for creativity. Mallory has always excelled as a creative problem-solver in business, but now with acrylics as her primary medium. She also delves into mixed media, integrating elements like collage, antique glassware, vintage hardware, and unique finds from flea markets and antique shops.
Originally from Shreveport, LA, Mallory pursued Geological Engineering at the University of Mississippi. After a successful career in the oil and gas industry spanning more than a decade, she found the stability and freedom to fully embrace her artistic calling. Mallory firmly believes that with determination, anyone can learn anything, leading her to embrace the path of an artist.
Currently, Mallory resides in New Canaan, CT, with her husband Neth and their two sons, James and Freddy.
Artist Statement
My journey into art was unconventional, transitioning from a decade-long career in the oil and gas industry to fully embrace my creative calling. I believe that with determination and passion, anyone can learn and grow, and my path as an artist reflects this belief. Each piece I create is a testament to my desire to keep learning, evolving, and telling new stories through experimentation, risk, and curiosity.
Each canvas begins with a spontaneous foundation—marks and blocks of color made from wiping my paintbrush from another piece. I cover the entire canvas this way, without thinking, free from preconceived ideas. My boys even often add their own touches, infusing the work with playful energy. From there, I refine the painting, layering intentional decisions over the initial freedom, shaping the piece until it feels complete.
I enjoy letting the initial layers show through, serving as a reminder that chaos and structure, the messy and the controlled, can coexist. In my current work, the Formation Series, I aim to merge logic with spontaneity, allowing unexpected moments to occur—a burst of color, a piece of collage, maybe even a rhinestone. My process isn’t about perfection but about discovery, where each layer, mark, and element adds complexity and meaning. Through my art, I hope to convey a sense of exploration, inviting viewers to see both the familiar and the unexpected in new ways.
